Halloween in Downtown Eugene 2026
Halloween night found me wandering downtown Eugene with a camera in my hand and absolutely no costume. I wasn't headed to a party, and I didn't have any particular destination in mind. I just thought it might be interesting to spend a little time around Broadway, see who was out, and photograph whatever caught my attention. Sometimes the best evenings with a camera are the ones without a plan. Just walking, observing, and letting the night unfold in front of you. And Halloween seemed like as good an excuse as any to get out of the house and see what was happening.

What surprised me most was just how many people had dressed up and how much fun everyone seemed to be having. Broadway was full of characters, from elaborate costumes that clearly took some serious planning to wonderfully ridiculous outfits that were impossible not to smile at. I approached people, asked if I could take their photographs, and found almost everyone happy to oblige. Some struck a pose, others gathered their friends, and a few really played to the camera. That's one of the things I've always loved about photographing people. The camera becomes a reason to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger, and for a brief moment, you get to share a little piece of their evening.

I came away from the night with more than just a collection of Halloween photographs. I was genuinely struck by the positive energy downtown. People were laughing, complimenting one another's costumes, and simply enjoying themselves. In a world that can sometimes feel a little too serious, it was refreshing to see so many people out having harmless fun together. I went downtown intending to document a little slice of Halloween in Eugene, but somewhere along the way, I found myself participating in it too. No costume required. Just a camera, a little curiosity, and a reminder of why I fell in love with photographing people in the first place.

Here's a few frames from my Halloween evening making new friends!
